Cowboy Western Music
As a boy, I loved to see the western movies and hear the cowboy
western style songs sung by cowboy stars such as Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Rex
Allen along with groups such as Sons of the Pioneers and Riders in
the Sky. I might add that I could see the movies for only 10 cents! What a
big deal back in those days!
Although western music was first brought to national attention by John Lomax in
his 1910 publication, Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads, for many
years folks grouped this music into the Country and Western genre.
While country started singing about tractors and honkytonks, western music
stayed true to their culture. Songs like Cool Water, Home on the Range, Red
River Valley, Happy Trails and Streets of Laredo continue to welcome new
fans within every generation.
